This war memorial consists of a stone orb atop of a tapering three sided shaft, which stands on a square plinth and three octagonal steps. On the shaft is a carved stone Laurel wreath. Originally, there was a bronze cross with a figure of Christ on top of the orb however this was removed by vandals some years ago. The memorial stands in front of St Matthew with Holy Trinity Church, Habergham Eaves, Burnley. The dedicatory inscriptions are incised into the base of the memorial in memory of those who fell in World War I.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,427 towards conservation of the memorial. This included cleaning of the stone to remove the copper staining, application of a poultice to the Laurel wreath to remove paint layers which had been applied to the stone, pinning of the fractures to the stone shaft using non-ferrous clamps and re-aligning the stonework which had shifted. The cobbles to the base of the plinth, which had been added at a later date were removed and the surrounding stonework and hardstanding area was made good and finally all joints were re-pointed using a lime mortar.
The memorial was designed by Mr J Harold Gibbons FRIBA of Manchester who also oversaw its construction and it was unveiled in May 1922. It was estimated to have costed between £200-£250 which was raised through public subscription from members of the Parish. The dedication ceremony was led by Rev H Pritt and was assisted by Rev John Barney and Mr J Longbottom. Unveiling was led by Mr R. S. Bardsley, who was chosen for all of his support offered to soldiers and sailors after the war.
The inscription on the base of the memorial reads:
In honour of our men who fell in the Great War 1914-1918
To our glorious dead
Their name liveth for evermore
They died that we might live
